Our story

A kitchen on South Street, a chef trained in one of Scotland’s award-winning Indian restaurants, and a town that had never had a curry house of its own.

The man in the kitchen

Mohammad Abbas

Before Bo’ness Spice, Mohammad Abbas was part of the award-winning Itihaas team in Dalkeith, just outside Edinburgh. In 2021 he brought that training west and took on a shopfront on South Street.

Until then, Bo’ness had never had an Indian restaurant or takeaway of its own. Ours was the first — and the response from the town in those early months is still the reason the doors open at four every afternoon.

In 2022 the restaurant was shortlisted for the Newcomer title at the Asian Restaurant Awards.

“We do not offer fast food. Every order is given the time and respect it deserves.”

Everything is cooked to order. That means we are sometimes slower than the place down the road at eight o’clock on a Friday, and we have made our peace with it. A curry that has been sitting in a pot since five is not what we want to hand you.

The cooking

Where the spice meets Scotland

The craft is in the blend — traditional aromatic spices worked against fresh Scottish produce. Our chefs grind and balance their own mixes rather than reaching for a jar, which is why the same dish tastes like ours and nobody else’s.

The menu draws on both Bangladeshi and Indian cooking, from the quiet ones to the dishes that will make you sit up. If you are not sure where to start, ring us — someone will happily talk you through it.

Feeding the town

Two of the things we have been proudest to be part of since opening.

December 2021

Christmas curries

That first Christmas, Mohammad cooked free curries for people receiving care at home. Dalriada Home Care ran them out across Bo’ness, Linlithgow, Falkirk and Grangemouth.

“I have always regarded working closely with the local community as an important part of being a businessman, and I wanted to do something to cheer these people up a bit.”

Mohammad Abbas

“It’s great to see communities coming together like this, especially at this time of year. Well done to everyone involved.”

Curry For Kyiv

Weeks after the invasion of Ukraine, we gave over a whole day of trading to the relief effort — half of everything taken on sit-in meals, takeaways and deliveries went to the Consulate of Ukraine in Edinburgh.

“The images coming out of Ukraine are truly heart-breaking. As a devoted family man, to see so many families suffering really struck a chord with me. We want to stand with Ukraine in any way possible.”

Mohammad Abbas
